Mediacom Communications Announces Roll-out of
Gigabit Broadband in 30 Kentucky Communities

Morgantown, KY– September 8, 2017 – Mediacom Communications today announced the completion of a major network upgrade that brings 1 Gig Internet speeds to a 12-county service area in west-central Kentucky. As a result, homes and businesses in 30 communities passed by Mediacom’s fiber-rich digital network now have access to internet download speeds that are up to 40 times faster than the minimum broadband definition set by the Federal Communications Commission.

Internet users with a connection to a 1-Gig broadband service can download data at a rate of one-gigabit-per-second – a speed that is among the fastest in the country. The 1-Gig speeds are available to Mediacom subscribers in areas extending from Breckinridge County to Monroe County (community impact list below). The enhanced broadband services is the result of a major investment the company made to transform its local fiber network, including activation of the newest broadband equipment installed in its Morgantown and Summershade facilities.

“Creating true gigabit communities across our national footprint was a central component of the 3-year, $1 billion capital expenditure plan announced by Mediacom in 2016,” said Joe DiJulio, Mediacom’s area operations director for Kentucky.

“Our company committed to a swift rollout of gigabit speeds throughout a wide geography. As a result, Mediacom is reducing the digital divide and has provided dozens of smaller communities and towns in Kentucky with a distinct technological advantage in today’s global marketplace.”

Mediacom was the first major U.S. cable company to fully transition to the DOCSIS 3.1 “Gigasphere” platform, the latest generation of broadband technology.  The company will utilize Gigasphere to bring gigabit broadband services to virtually all of the 3 million homes and businesses within its 22 state footprint.  With the latest round of launches announced today, Mediacom is now offering 1 Gig Internet services in over 1,200 communities across the United States. In conjunction with each 1 Gig Internet announcement, Mediacom will also introduce a new 500 Mbps tier of service.

“In addition to enhancing speeds for residential and small business customers today, the Gigasphere platform we have deployed also lays the groundwork for offering multi-Gig services in the future,” saidMediacom’s Chief Technology Officer, JR Walden.  “This next generation technology is an excellent complement to the Gigabit+ Fiber SolutionsTM that Mediacom Business has been offering local businesses in our markets for many years.”

Mediacom’s transition to a “Gigasphere” technology uses the company’s existing fiber-optic network infrastructure that extends through areas of Western Kentucky. Customers who choose to connect to 1-Gig service can use existing connections to their home or business, and Mediacom those customers with a new, more powerful modem and home Wi-Fi equipment.

About DOCSIS 3.1 Gigasphere Technology

The cable network is composed of a hybrid of optical fiber and coaxial cable elements, and the specification that enables use of the network for broadband is known as Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification, or DOCSIS®. Gigasphere is the brand name for products and services that use a technical specification called DOCSIS 3.1, the next generation of DOCSIS services developed and advanced by CableLabs, the U.S. cable industry’s research and development consortium, and its members. DOCSIS 3.1 provides a near-term path toward continued improvement of cable broadband performance, with network capacity of up to 10 gigabits per second in the downstream and up to 2 gigabits per second in the upstream.
